Is there a way to crack wep with a macbook, either on os x or windows? i tried that tool with the little red devil (can't recall the name) and it just doesnt work.

KisMAC. I think it requires the card/WiFi hardware to be put into passive mode, which can't be done with Apple's drivers.
There use to be an app from a group called Nexus 9 that would do this, called Airstumbler. Unfortunately the group fell apart and the app is somewhat scarce nowadays to find.
