A family member dropped my iPad Mini 7 and cracked the screen in the corner (forming an hypotenuse if that makes sense) about an inch and a half from the corner. I do have AppleCare. It's not all that noticeable and had a screen protector on when it happened, which may have lessened the damage. Actually I have to 'look for it' to notice it. Can this be repaired and will they, since this was my fault ? And should I even bother since it's not that noticeable. If I do, please explain the process as far as protecting my passwords, personal info and such ? Do you mail it ? Or does it have to be brought to an Apple Store ? How long does this usually take ? Thanks...

No one can tell you if you should have it fixed….. that subjective and completely up to you. As for the process, I just went through this because I dropped my iPad mini 7 with AppleCare. If you decide to have it fixed, use the Apple Support app, which should show you these two options. Which option you choose will dictate whether or not you have to worry about protecting anything, but Apple makes the process very easy.

Thanks for the reply... my mini is 'locked' by a password as I suppose most are, is that secure enough to hand it over to a repair shop ?
If that is questionable then I'll not go forward with it. Did the repair shop have to turn on your ipad to repair, or can they repair it without getting into the os ? I'd think the latter. Thanks....

I went with the $99 option so I could set up the new Mini from the old Mini, make sure everything was working properly first, then erase and return the cracked Mini.

Personally I'd go with the $99 option too, just as a time-savings (the Apple Store is a haul from here - 2 hours - plus time in the store, it's not worth the $70 savings).

But, like others said - simple enough to just erase it, take it in, get it fixed, restore it.

I'm very new to Apple products, the iPad Mini is my first and I've only owned it for approx a few weeks. Unfortunately it was dropped soon after purchase. Not being familiar with the process, can someone post a few links/videos on how to go about erasing and then restoring.

One thing, I just have to ask though. If my iPad is 'protected' with Touch ID and then a password to get in, why are we erasing/restoring ? I would think one could replace the glass without turning it one and with the password and Touch ID how would the repair person get into the Mini to access personal info. And if it is that easily bypassed then what is the point ? Just want to better understand... thank you.

"We" are not ;) at least, I would not.

You might have to restore, of course, in case the storage component or the whole iPad is swapped. Personally, I would not erase.

But if you want to erase it, Vaya con Dios.

As far as the "possible" restore, personally, I have my iPad backed up to iCloud. You could use a computer (Mac or Windoze) if you prefer, but IMO that's more trouble than it's worth.
