I cracked my MacBook Pro screen about half a year ago and I'm finally making the effort to get all my files onto an external hard drive since I didn't do that before it broke. I've been able to get it hooked up to my tv but I'm not directed to the log in screen. Instead I'm directed to the reset password screen. Usually that wouldn't be a problem but for all of the options I have to enter my Apple ID and password and it's continuously saying it cannot connect to iCloud even though I'm connected to wifi. Any ideas on how I can resolve the issue?

Could you tell us which model you have? The most likely cause is a problem with wifi, trying with ethernet would be preferable, especially since the wifi antennas is part of the screen structure

Umm I'm not sure if this is going to answer your question but I believe it's the MacBook Pro with a 13 inch screen. I bought it back in 2012 or 13

OKay, then you would need a dongle to get ethernet...
if you go to https://www.icloud.com and go to find my (device) what does it say with your MBP there?
and I just need to ask, have you tried to restart your router?
It only has my phone under the "My Devices" portion. And I hadn't tried to restart my router because the wifi was working for my phone and tablet.

okay, try restarting the router, let I be turned of for 10 sec. do the same with the MBP. if it still won't connect you might want to look into finding a thunderbolt 2 to ethernet dongle. Or depending on your location go visit a apple store and see if they have an idea.

The thing is I am not sure that you are able to do a file transfere with some of the build in features if you do not have the password for the Mac...

Thanks for your help! If it just went to the log in page I would be able to put in the password. It just won't go there.

you are welcome. Another thing you could try (provided you have access to another Mac) is target disk mode, which might get you into the files... I am not sure as I have not done it before, especially with a Mac which is stuck at password reset.

Startup manager might also be worth trying, here you will be able to choose which disk, might be tied to a fail there.

A last ditch effort might be trying recovery mode where you reinstall the OS. This should not affect files already on the machine, but it is important to be aware in the process as not to click anything which will format the drive.

Should it happen that your SSD became damaged in the drop I am afraid we can't do much in terms of help

Thanks! I'll try the ones that I can (since I don't have another Mac). I might just have to come to terms that everything is gone.

That is though to come to terms with, if you are unsuccessful with the things I suggested and you decide to get another Mac. go to a store, bring your machine, explain what happened and ask politely if there is a way they can help you recover the items to the new machine. if you do this bring some proof of purchases on the old machine.

And update me on the progress, hope you get access to your stuff
