Cracked screen, well, display maybe?

My missus dropped her iPhone 6s Plus, on Tuesday. There is a crack that goes from left to right, in the top part of the screen.
The actual display seems fine, and thus she can read characters and the likes.

I've scheduled an appointment with Apple, for Tuesday. The initial cost to fix it, is around $149. But, here is hoping they merely need to change the 'outer' part of the screen and not the display itself. If that makes sense

In 9 years, this is the first time that she's damaged a smartphone. While I'm at the Apple shop, I might go ahead and buy an Apple Care for it, too.

The whole screen is fused together. Glass, lcd and digitizer.

That's unfortunate. I have a crack in the first 1/8 inch of my top left corner. Was hoping there would be a glass repair option cheaper than getting a whole new screen.

As others said, no glass only option. If you purchased that device more than 60 days ago you won't be able to get AppleCare Plus. I don't even know if Apple will let you purchase it after a damage has occurred (even if repaired by them).

My wife's screen cracked even with a tempered glass protector. Stuff happens...

Not so sure about that. My friend broke the screen on his 6S and it had one of the fancy glass protectors. If it hits on the edge, the screen protector will not help and in fact will add another $10 to the repair!
