Testing a Macbook 16 inch that I bought Refurbished. It's an i9 2.4. While running it alongside a i9 2.3 using Geekbench on each, I heard what I can only describe as "cracking" noises coming from the chasis. It definitely is not that cracking speaker issue, but I assume could have something to do with things heating up. I suppose I'm willing to live with this but I have not encountered it on any of the other 16 inches that I've tested out. Makes me wonder if this is why it was returned/refurbished. Assume with something like this it's not wise to keep the model. It will be my 3rd return this month: the first had a bad battery, second had a dim screen (apple store agreed that I should return both), and now this.

Here's the noise I'm talking about. It happens when the system is under stress and more often when it's previously been off or at a very low temperature. That makes me think it has something to do with the metal/thermals. It seems... not good. If you run Geekbench after the computer was off, this will happen two or possibly three times.

Bumping this. Would you keep this model if it is otherwise OK?

See the attached video for a better example of how loud and repetitive this is when doing something intensive from a cooler state.

I had a 2019 13 inch MBP that made a crackling noise, but it sounded more like twisting a plastic water bottle. Customer Service said the issue is usually monitor related. The unit was repaired twice(replaced logic board) due to it not turning on. After talking with Apple customer service over a period of many weeks, they decided to offer me a full refund or replacement. I chose a refund and ordered a brand new 16 inch. Were the other two 16 inch MBP also refurbished?

Howdy Corncab44,

I am not able to listen to your file where I am, but you should not be hearing ANY sound outside of the fans and the speakers in the machine. It is possible the noise is related to a component heating up and expanding, but that is not "normal" behavior in my book. Talk to Apple, and I would suggest you swap it out. Good luck!
