Hello all,
Recently when reviewing threads in this forum discussing the new MacBook Pros, someone had mentioned that the machine was virtually silent, with the exception of the graphics card making a crackling noise. This was of concern to me as I currently have a similar situation with my existing G4 Powerbook:
Currently on my old G4 Powerbook if I access System Preferences (running Tiger) and access Energy Saver, there is a dropdown option called Processor Performance, and the selections are: Automatic, Reduced, Highest. If Highest is selected you can hear a very pronounced crackling or "sizzling" noise. This does not occur when it is set to Automatic or Reduced.
At the time the Apple store did not know the answer to this noise and if I set it to Automatic it went away, so I kept the machine and use it to this day. I do not set it to Highest as the noise is quite pronounced and annoying.
However I am now considering a new MacBook Pro, and wanted to see if this was still an issue. I am not certain if the Processor Performance field still exists in Snow Leopard, but wanted to see overall if people are noticing this noise. I had assumed the noise was resolved years ago, but with someone recently mentioning this in a post, I wanted to get feedback from other MacBook Pro users.
Also, if so, it would be interesting to see if this noise is coming from both the i7 and i5 processor, or both? Or if it is coming from the GPU?
Thanks for any feedback!
