Hi all,

I've created a few video files using Compressor, using the "Dolby Digital" option for surround sound. When I play any of these on my system then I get a faint-yet-noticeable crackling sound from the rear right speaker. It only affects the one speaker, and only affects files that I've made myself.

I don't know too much about surround formats so I've just used the default settings, repeated here:

Channel layout: 5.1 (L C R Ls Rs LFE)
Sample rate: 48 kHz
Target system: DVD Video
Data rate: 448 kb/s
Bit stream mode: Complete Main
Surround mode: Not Indicated
Surround EX mode: Not Indicated
Stereo downmix: Not Indicated
Lo/Ro centre: -3.0 dB
Lo/Ro surround: -3.0 dB
Lt/Rt centre: -3.0 dB
Lr/Rt surround: -3.0 dB
DRC line mode: Film Standard Compression
DRC RF mode: Film Standard Compression
LFE low-pass filter: On
DC filter: On
90° phase-shift: On
3 dB attenuation: Off
Dialog normalisation: -27 dbFS

I have no idea what most of those settings mean! Can anyone suggest what I should try to tweak to avoid the crackling sound?

Alternatively, can anyone recommend another encoder (preferably free) that can create either AC3 or DTS tracks?

Thanks :)
