After updating to El Capitan, I can no longer shutdown or restart my macbook pro without crashing. I think it's a kernal panic but cannot confirm because I have limited knowledge of the subject.

Anyway I found that if I logout first before shutting down or restarting, no crash occurs. This is a bit annoying but what I find mostly problematic is I cannot install system patches anymore due to the inability to restart from the App Store. Any solutions to either installing updates OR fixing said crashes? Thank you.
