First thing to try is a memory test. I don't know if there are any OSX tools for this, though.

Memory test software, it costs $1.40 though so isn't free.

In Disk Utility click the Verify disk button. If it says you have problems do the following:

Restart holding down Command+S

When the prompt appears type fsck -fy and hit return.
Your disk will be inspected and repaired if necessary.
Type reboot and hit return.

Perfectly safe. However if you're having problems it would make sense to back up any important data, just in case your hard drive's dying.
