This never happened before.

My phone just went BRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and an Amber Alert from Miami, FL popped up with a license plate and vehicle description, some 2013 Grey Impala.

I don't recall opting in for any alert like this.

You didn't opt in. it part of the new Emergency Alert System built into the cellular networks across the U.S.

----------

You can disable them by going to Settings > Notifications and scroll to the bottom and you'll see Amber Alerts

You can turn them off...

Settings-->Notifications-->Scroll to the bottom and slide the options off.

Just got it too (also in Florida), and even better, it actually caused the phone to connect to the handsfree/bluetooth (we were in the car), so that screeching tone was REALLY LOUD :D

I think you can turn it off under settings and then notifications and its all the way at the bottom.

I turned them off. The thought is good but the execution is poor.

It alerts the abductor to switch cars ASAP.
Better that than nothing. Plus in quite a few cases they still don't think of doing that, and/or someone can spot them before they change cars, and/or at least the old car can still be spotted and still help progress the investigation if another car was obtained later.

The Amber alert first showed up for me a few months ago; it was nothing I opted in for, Verizon just started doing it. My wife nearly had a heart attack from the horrible scream.

I disabled it as soon as I could find out how.

That is really the actual poor implementation part. They should really make it so that the alert isn't as jolting as it is (yes, it needs to be of importance, but not so much that it actually makes people cringe and dislike the way it alerts) and have it follow more of the "rules" of the phone, where if you have Do Not Disturb set, then it should follow that. It would certainly have less people "hating" the way it has been implemented so far.
