I was wondering if anyone might know how I can get a full Lion installer that can be used offline.
I didn't actually buy Lion, it came preinstalled, so I don't have the option to re-download it from the MAS. Not sure that if I had bought it I'd have that option anyways though, considering ML is out.
I recently bought ML though since Apple finally released 10.8.3 and I decided by that point, I would install if the problems with it seem minimal or non-existant.
But before I install I want to create a Lion installer image. I'm aware of the Recovery Assistant tool that can clone my Recovery HD to a USB drive. But the problem with the Recovery HD is it only contains tools such as Disk Utility and whatnot, it doesn't actually contain install files. Instead, it downloads them.
Since I can't download the Lion installer to get the InstallESD.dmg image, and the Recovery HD isn't an offline installer, is there any way I can fix this?
I do happen to have Parallels Desktop, which is capable of running a Lion / Mountain Lion VM. I was wondering if I create an external Recovery HD with the assistant tool, then boot that in Parallels and let it run, will that download the Lion offline installer? And if I stop it at the point when it is finished downloading but hasn't installed, will I be able to examine the virtual hard disk and extract the InstallESD.dmg file?
Also if anyone's wondering, because there's at least one of you that will always ask why, I'm doing this because I want a full offline installer of the OS that came on my computer. Lion 10.7.4, just so if I ever want or need the option, I can reinstall the same OS that the computer came with. I hope it won't be necessary, but I'd like to have it anyways.
Thanks.
