Created Mailbox on my Mac not working

Since installing Leopard, when I create a new mailbox on my mac to organize and store old mail, the mailbox gets created but when I try to drag and drop mail messages from the inbox to the new mailbox for storage, it won't drop in. It pops back into the Inbox. HELP!
