Creating a playable DVD in iMovie or iDVD

I have been able to download my movies from my Canon HD VIXIA HF21 into iMovie. I then created a project and then shared it with iDVD to create a DVD that is playable on my computer. It is in a .mov file. This is not recognized on my Blue ray or DVD player and in unreadable on either unit. How can I create a DVD through iDVD or iMovie that is playable on my computer and on my DVD or Blue ray players. iDVD allows you to make a DVD directly into a DVD using OneStep DVD through a firewire connection but my Canon VIXIA HF21 connects to the computer via USB cable
