I want to make a start up disk from either a Flash Drive or from and external Hard Drive. THey are both USB> Also maybe from my ipod which i only have the USB Connection for.

I have read you have to use Firewire. Is there a way around this problem??

Correct

OP, what Mac are you using?

If you are using a newer intel mac, then it can boot via USB but if it is firewire capable then I would use FW.

Most of the PPC models only had USB 1, but they all had FireWire (not at first, but there's probably only one guy in the world still using his 6100). Apple never bothered with USB booting until the Intel models came out, so there wouldn't be a way around it even if you had a USB 2.0 PCI card.

Hi THere. I am using a Ibook G4 1.2mhz and a imac G5 2.1.

Is there any way to use USB to make a bootable start up disk. I am reading NO Sadly??

No, there isn't a way to do that on a PPC based mac, sorry. Time to invest in a FW external if you want to make a boot drive. If you want to use your ipod, buy a FW cord for it, that would be the cheapest solution.

THANKS Hey my son had the firewire connection and I used it and it worked.
I used the PortableOSX software and it worked great! Fantastic.

I have another question.
How do you connect another device to rule out that the screen on an IBOOK G4 is good or not. I want to connect another device without opening it up. I have about 4 to test.
THANKS

Can my imac be connected directly as another screen device? how can I do this if the ibooks are not right now viewable and are gray screens only.

I am just trying to rule out the screen as I think it is the logic boards but wanting to have proof of the screen being ok.

Thanks ahead of time
