Hi guys, I'm based in the UK. A few years ago I created a US account using a Yahoo email address (a mistake creating a yahoo email, I know).

I've just tried to log into this US Yahoo email address on my PC using iCloud.com, but it's asking me to create an Apple ID - "To use iCloud Mail, create a new email address by turning on Mail in your iCloud settings using iOS or macOS".

If I do this, will I lose my Yahoo email account and emails? If not and it's safe to do so, can I simply sign out of my UK account on my iPad or iPhone, and sign into my US account and then create an email address?

My overall aim is to download US apps on my iPad and download the Peacock app and use a VPN to watch UK soccer.

Your Yahoo email address is just an account name for your Apple ID. It has nothing to do with the Yahoo account itself, including its emails.

When you create an Apple ID with a third-party email address, you won’t get iCloud Mail by default. If you want to use iCloud Mail, you have to enable it in the iCloud settings and choose an icloud.com email address. You can still use your Yahoo email address for login (you can also uncouple it once you create an icloud.com email address and use that one instead).

You can log out of your “UK account” and log into your “US account”. Just be aware that if you are using iCloud data, i.e. data stored on iCloud servers, that data might get deleted from your device on logout, requiring you to redownload it all when you log back in. Also note that you need to log into your US account for updates to those apps.

KALLT thank you for the advice.

So can I sign in to icloud with my Yahoo email address and get an Apple ID from there? If so, will it port the emails I have in my Yahoo account to my icloud account? No biggie though if that's not possible.

But main thing is, this email address MUST be a US account. And I have a load of films on my US account bought from iTunes. I do not want to lose these.

I will also uncouple the Yahoo email address - unless that would cause me to lose my US account and films.

And for logging out of accounts - I took a chance earlier today and all seemed well. It asks you if yiu want to keep data on device or delete it.

I understood that you have two Apple IDs, one with the country set to US and your Yahoo email address as the account name (with which you have made iTunes purchases), and one with the country set to UK. These are separate accounts, so any changes you make to one Apple ID won’t affect the other one.

What you asked for before was whether enabling iCloud email would affect (1) your Apple ID, (2) your Yahoo emails and now (3) your purchases made in the US iTunes Store. When you enable iCloud email on that Apple ID, nothing happens except that you add a new email address (@icloud.com) to your Apple ID which you can also use for logging in (you can also keep the Yahoo account name). Your Apple ID’s country setting (US in this case) won’t change and your purchases on the iTunes Store won’t be affected until a change is made. You do not have to create an iCloud email address if you are only interested in making purchases on the App Store/iTunes Store.

Again, your Yahoo account is a completely separate thing. You are only using your email address as an account name, nothing else. It has nothing to do with Apple’s services. Likewise, your emails on yahoo.com will stay there, they are not migrated to iCloud (though there are ways to import/export emails to and from accounts, if you want to).
