creating alias in terminal breaks x11

I created some aliases in terminal, which worked fine in terminal, trouble is all my x11 alaias (namely nedit and ethereak) stopped working, deleting the file that contained the terminal aliases then allowed x11 aliases to work properly again.

Any ideas how to get aliases in terminal and x11 working at the same time?
