Hi,

I tried to make my own icon using this tutorial, but when I export these settings (EDIT: Don't mind the nice Kindergarten Cop picture of California's Governor):

I get this when I see the files info:

http://img40.imageshack.us/my.php?image=afbeelding1.png

But it just shows the "Preview" icon in the upper right corner, which means I can't really use it for any apps or anything. Can anyone help me out with this? I double checked every step of the tutorial, even tried it with just one single picture (even just a PSD file instead of TIFF).

As far as I know, Icon Composer creates icons that you should place in the application package. You can make simple icons with Img2Icns. If you want to have control over the smaller states, you can use the IconBuilder plugin for Photoshop. I think the trial should be enough to create one icon.

Edit: did you als follow this step?
Drag and drop the .icns file onto the Icns2Icon application. Unfortunately, it doesn’t give you notice that it’s done its job, but it has. There aren’t any screens that come up (it just converts your .icns file to contain a usable icon in its resources).

I'm so, so sorry about reviving a "dead" thread, but this came up while I was looking for a solution for my current problem.

This doesn't seem to be a response to making an icon, but a general system problem. I've replaced many icons before, but my macbook stopped recognizing preview images in the "get info" tab earlier this morning.

Since then, icons that previously worked appear as this (see GarageBand) and images in general tend to look like this.

Does anyone know how I might resolve this issue?

I just use a PNG image 128x128, for replacing icons.

The format/extension size doesn't seem to be the issue. As you can see in the second link, I'm not even trying to replace an icon. The get info thumbnail seems to be invalid even when I try to view a random .icns or .png file.

run OnyX, clear caches, fix permissions, run scripts. It's probably just some incongruence somewhere in a setting or cache. One of those things might fix it, if not then we can dig deeper.

Done, done, and done. Alas, the problem continues.

It doesn't seem to be an issue with all images, just some. Curious.
