I've got a bizarre hardware issue where my 2007 MacBook no longer recognizes the make/model of the built-in display, instead seeing it as "Unknown Monitor". The colors are a bit off--not too big a deal--but the real problem* is that it's only making the default set of resolutions available, which does not include the native 1280x800. The closest I can get is 1280x768, which weirdly makes the bottom 32 lines repeat the content of the top 32.
I'm hoping to get a new one soon, but in the meantime, is there a way to add fully custom resolutions to OS X, the way PowerStrip does for Windows? I have tried the demo version of SwitchResX, but after much experimentation I can't get it to do what I need. If I'm missing something there, I'd be happy to hear advice.
Thanks!
*Actually, the real real problem is that every time I reboot the machine, it comes up with the brightness set to 0 and a screen flicker so bad that it's unusable even after I turn the brightness up. Fortunately I figured out that having an external monitor plugged in during boot fixes that, at least.
