Creative IR Receiver and 9-pin Serial Connection

I'm trying to hook my Creative IR Receiver up to my g4 Power Mac. I've found a program (LIRC) that wil allow me to use it, but I can't figure out how to hook it to the mac. It is a 9-pin serial connection. Do I need a controller card? Will a serial-to-usb adapter work?
Here is a picture of it and some specs.

Bump...Someone has to have needed to use a serial device on their mac, right?
