Crossgrade from version 3

A co-worker is planning on upgrading from version 3 to FCS 5.1 trough the crossgrade program, he just bought a MBP and thinks that he is ready to catch up with times. I told him how I did it from version 4.5, but he says that the apple site doesn't requires for versions 1-2-3 to send the discs back it just has a buy now option, his question is: if this is an upgrade does he has to install FC3 in the MBP? if so how? because as far as I know any non universal version of FC won't install in the Intel Macs

I couldn't help him but I hope you guys can
