I have bought a 1TB Crucial M550 SSD and installed it as an external SSD but it seems so slow. I don't know whether the external USB3 case is crappy or whatever but SSDs are supposed to be faster than conventional drives but mine is very slow (I tried to transfer 90GB of data to the SSD but the estimated time was 3 days! Can anyone help to see if I've done anything wrong.

Your 17" MBP only has USB 2.0, so you will only get USB 2.0 speeds (30-60MB/s) even if your enclosure is USB 3.0.

If you want to experience SSD speeds, the only ways are:

1. Install it internally in your MBP.

2. Install it in a Thunderbolt enclosure and use it via the Thunderbolt port.

USB isn't an option here, unless you're willing to buy a CalDigit Thunderbolt dock.

I forgot to mention that the SSD is connected to a CalDigit Thunderbolt dock.
