Ventura 13.5, Mac Safari 16.6 on a MAc Studio. Crunchyroll is appearing as a black screen and the player shows what should be playing on screen. Safemode shows the same problem and the reinstall of the OS/clearing cache doesn't fix the issue. NO extensions installed. Chrome and Firefox can play the video just fine.

Any idea what could be going on?

Update: I localized the issue to the HDMI port and using it with Crunchyroll on Safari in the Mac Studio. The issue does not appear when using an HDMI to thunderbolt connector. Testing HDMI on Chrome and Firefox are not affected but for some reason Safari is specific to this issue with Crunchyroll. Apple has no idea why it is happening and all the usual methods did not fix the problem.

The monitor is not the cause as Chrome/Firefox with HDMI works just fine.

Taking the issue up with Apple Store to see what is going on.

i have the (almost) same issue today, for some reason?
...just a black screen on all website videos (Firefox & Safari,) ...but the ads play fine (of course). ...was working fine this morning, then died? Weird.

Have you tried using HDMI to thunderbolt/USB-C connection in the back? When I don't use the HDMI it seems the issue isn't happening so it is a very specific combination that replicates the issue but I am not sure what it is about Crunchyroll that doesn't agree with Safari+HDMI on the Mac Studio

Sounds like an HDCP (DRM) issue.

There used to be a bug where Macs would generally behave weirdly with HDCP in multi-monitor scenarios (for MacBooks, this equates to a single external monitor). Not sure if that's still a thing but it might apply to you.

And unfortunately, Safari has always been flaky in this respect, so I'd recommend Chrome for sites serving DRM-protected content. (I say this as someone who generally prefers Safari)

You might have some luck by disconnecting HDMI cables, power-cycling the monitor(s) and Studio, then reconnecting cables. Make sure the devices actually turn off rather than going to sleep, and that cables are fully inserted.

For funsies, or to determine if DRM is in use somewhere: you can try taking a screenshot or screen-recording of a working playback session (e.g., in Chrome). Though you'll be able to see the video just fine on the display, it should appear pure black in any screenshot/recording.

I figured it was some kind of DRM but I did some more testing and here is what I found:

HDMI + ASUS VA32A monitor = Safari/Chrome/Firefox and Crunch roll works
HDMI + DELL 37.5" IPS U3818DW = Safari & Crunchyroll doesn't work BUT Firefox/Chrome does

Seems it is a specific Combo of the Dell U3818DW/Safari/HDMI/Crunchyroll that doesn't work and I have no idea why
