crushed text when scrolling

When I scroll down with my touch pad all the lines of text get crushed into each other. This is most noticeable in Safari but also happens in other apps.

I am using a MacBook Pro 2.4 Core 2 Duo with 10.5.4.

When I Select All, then click on the screen it fixes the text. It doesn't do it if I use the blue scroll bar at the side.

Any ideas how to fix this?
