What is it with Adobe's cross-program interface? They claim that a generic interface helps improve workflow, but it still feels to me as though every application was created by a completely different team of people. I know that that is, of course, the truth of it, but I thought the idea was to generalise the interface!!!
Why is it, then, that every application feels completely different! Heres a few examples...
- Photoshops interface is darker than the rest of the applications.
- Illustrators toolbar icons are set within little squares...unlike PS or ID.
- Dreamweaver and InDesign's startup window doesn't hide when you switch to a different application, it remains in the background...unlike Illustrator. This really annoys me.
- ID has REALLY tiny colour selection palettes in the toolbar, whilst AI's are slightly more conveniently sized, and PS's are even larger! Every applications toolbar seems to be a slightly different overall width.
- What should be standard tool palettes vary, for example the Align tool palette appears different in every app.
- In DW I can place the insert toolbar beside the new Appliations toolbar, rather than below it (I know...I like the insert bar back in it's old position) I cant do this in any other app with the main toolbar, despite the room on my large monitor. I don't like the way the Applications bar takes up so much more space for so few features. I can turn it off, but if its gonna be there why not integrate it into the existing toolbars?
- And why is it that when DW or FW loads, they have a black border around the load screen?
Is it just me that thinks this is a bit of a let-down on Adobe's part? I know it's hardly the major issue, and can't deny that the general interface has a fantastic feel, but I had hoped that CS4 would see all those little differences within CS3's interface refined.
