I disabled SIP using csrutil in Recovery mode (...to change some ugly Apple app icons - didn't work - why so ***** hard to change icons now??) and then I tried enabling SIP, same way. It said it was enabled. I rebooted, did a csrutil status and it said it was disabled! So I went back to Recovery mode, enabled again, rebooted - still disabled. I tried csrutil clear, rebooted, csrutl enable, it said enabled, but status shows disabled. WTF?

Any ideas?

I'm using OpenCore Legacy Patcher (2.4.0) and I'm running MacOS 15.5.

I didn't know those options were available. I tried it and now my computer won't boot. It was on a never-ending reboot cycle. On the plus side, in Recovery mode, it shows SIP as enabled.

But I'm still trying to figure out why it's not booting now.

The only thing I could do is boot in safe mode, then in OpenCore, set the SIP back to the way it was. Then it booted normally. I rebooted multiple times, then went into Recovery to enable SIP, but it STILL shows as disabled.

So I'm still screwed.

I've successfully disabled and enabled SIP before on this computer, but with different version of OpenCore/MacOS. I don't get it.

At this point you should provide detailed system information and configuration. Also, perhaps moderator can move this thread to the Sequoia on unsupported Macs thread where your questions might get more traction.

The moment I saw your thread title I knew that you are talking about OCLP.

If you are using dosdude1 patcher/OCLP you will have to assume that the SIP is disabled 99.9% of the time as disabling SIP is probably the first thing/discovery that made "macOS on unsupported Macs" even possible.

Different macOS=different SIP: For example on my Mid 2012 13'' MBP: SIP disabled in Big Sur will show up as enabled if I boot it to macOS Mojave.

One time I disabled SIP then tried to upgrade, it wouldn't boot until I went into Recovery mode and enabled it. That's what I'm worried about. If there is an upgrade to Tahoe, I might be screwed if I can't enable it.

Well, there might not be an upgrade if they can't get around the T2 problem, so then I'd be worrying for nothing.

... I went into Recovery mode and enabled it.
I feel that you don't understand that dosdude1 patcher and OCLP will forcefully overwrite this(like SIPdisabler.kext in case of the dosdude1 patcher).

Changing this in OCLP is possible but you will have to rebuild OC and copy it to the EFI every time you change SIP settings. You really need to know what you are doing though otherwise it is best to let the OCLP decide what are the best settings for your particular Mac.

I didn't know that. If that's the case, then I wonder why during my last major upgrade it wouldn't boot until I went into Recovery to enable it. Maybe it was just a weird coincidence.

That gives me hope that I won't be screwed in the next upgrade.

(and yes, I know about rebuilding OC and copying to EFI)

Which Recovery though? Each macOS(installer) has its own Recovery plus you also have an Internet Recovery. There is no point going into the Recovery that is natively supported by your Mac.
