Is it just me or is there something wrong with smiley encoding?

Why exactly does this code combination
Code:
:o
generate this smiley  ??? Does the above code not correspond to 'screaming/yelling face' instead???

Anyone?

I'm not sure which you mean by "screaming/yelling face", but if you simply start a post and click on each smiley icon, you'll see what code goes with which. You can cancel the post before actually posting, but it will show you what you need to know.

Fortunately, we don't have a screaming/yelling face emoticon

Sorry, I meant to say 'surprised/shocked smiley' instead of 'screaming/yelling', something like this:

Well, it is Site & Forum Feedback section after all. I thought I'd mention this as it clearly is a smiley encoding bug. At least, it is in my opinion.
My first thought was that it's not a bug, it is specifically coded that way on purpose.

However, how about pointing us to a standard definitions reference for encoding smileys. :)

Well, it isn't a bug, that much is certain

Looking for my standardized list for encoding emoticons from the International Symposium of Metadata and Internet Legal Information on Emoticons

Maybe I should've used a better word instead of 'bug' because whoever coded this way clearly made a mistake.

I'm sorry, but you might laugh if I say 'refer to Wikipedia'. So I won't.

Tell me honestly, when you look at this code combination
Code:
:o
what kinda smiley do you visualize: this

or this

I very much doubt it was a mistake: that implies that whoever setup the shortcuts intended to choose a different one and hit the wrong key. It seems exceptionally unlikely that that is the case.

It's been that way since I joined. Changing it now would be far too confusing.

The latest releases of vBulletin use the graphic
redface.png
for the code  .

They call that smilie "embarrasment", which has one 's' missing from the word. That's a suitable reason for embarrassment!
