Sorry, I know I’m way late to the party on this one, but am I correct in understanding that none of the Pencils that are compatible with the latest iPads (M2 Air and M4 Pro) can be charged by magnetically sticking them to the side of the iPad?

If so, isn’t this a real downgrade? That was perhaps the 2nd gen Pencil’s best feature! Such an elegant, practical and convenient way to charge. In fact, it was like you didn’t have to charge at all. Just carrying the Pencil with your iPad took care of it. Now I need a cable, and this is an upgrade?

Nope, you've got it wrong. The Apple Pencil magnetically attaches and charges wirelessly on the iPad Air and iPad Pro. There is a cheaper USB-C version that can be charged using a cable though.

The Apple Pencil Pro, you mean? So it does still charge magnetically? That's good to know! It seems that I was misinformed, but I'm happy to be wrong. Thank you for the clarification!

There are some that charge with the iPad wireless while attached magnetically. I just went with the USB-C one as I am only using it to jot down notes and nothing artistic. It is really smooth and natural feeling, no lag or delay at all for how I use it.

At an AAPL Store yesterday (I visited to purchase a new iPad Pro), I had time to test the compatibility of the various Pencil devices.

Took various Pencils from device-to-device, experienced how they attached (or did not).

The Pencil Pro definitely attaches-to (and charges) the M4 variants.

Pencil 2 *definitely* does not magnetically attach-to/interact-with the M4 variants.

I purchased the 11" M4 iPP, and got the PP to match.

Interestingly, the transaction was so speedy, I felt no urgent need to PP (thank the Gods for that) ;)
