I have searched both here and with Google, watched several YouTube videos, and it seems the Netkas version of updating the firmware no longer works. I tried a method by Jensd_be, but after several attempts, it still failed to work.

Is there any other way to get this to work?

Yes, and I get the 5570 error. Watched this video twice, paused it 50 times, still nothing. Is this the only way it can be done now?

I tried to follow the link in the post below, but the web site is now gone. All the info I am finding is old.

So far I have not found any answers. What I am finding is "could be the hard drive", Could be (other expensive hard part)", but no real answers.
I am at the point where I am not sure it is worth all the trouble to upgrade this old Mac, when I can gut it, install a MATX motherboard, modern AMD CPU, run any GPU I want, and have all the modern computer features.
I may just install El Capitan on both 2009s and find someone that wants to deal with all the Apple issues. As the 3.1s seem to be of less value, I will convert another one to MATX and make it a Hackintoch if I need Mac OS.

So, I have finally done it. I got 5,1 firmware to install. I suspected that I was missing something, and it must have been lost in translation on the video (My Fault), but I went and used his written post, followed along and I was able to get it to work just fine.
I upgraded to High Sierra and I am now working on Mojave. I have an RX580 8gb, RX570 8gb and a RX570 4gb.
When running Mojave, do you leave the GT120 in and install the RX580 above it? Or just run the RX580? If both, does the position matter?

Remove the GT120 and use only one of the RX5xx-cards (all Polaris gpu, metal supported) for the installation/upgrade.

Well, that seems to be working. In about 30 minutes I will be running Mojave.
Now I can start doing the same thing on my other one. Not sure why, it just seems like a good idea.
Thank you for your help. I think I will enjoy it now that it has Mojave. Even High Sierra was a nice improvement.
