Sorry if this has come up before, but is there a way to make it so that when someone changes the background in an iMessage conversation it only changes on their phone? It seems really strange to me that one person in a chat gets to decide the aesthetics of every other participant's devices.

This is a classic case of Apple not understanding how people actually want things to work in the real world. Every other chat app I use gives you the option of setting the background just for yourself so that you don't have to force your background on everyone else (and you don't get a background forced on you).

Apple's current dumb "solution" is to turn off all backgrounds. 🙄

Send them feedback about it: https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone/

In contrast, I could imagine most teens and kids wanting this feature.
I guess I should clarify that I don't think shared backgrounds is inherently a bad feature, it's just that there's no ability to override it for yourself.

Have the option to use the shared background or your own background, just like with with the profile photos (where you can accept the photo that the other person has shared, or override it with a contact photo you set for them).

Yeah, that’s all I’m asking for, a choice.
A shared background can be fun, but I also don’t necessarily want to have whatever background someone else chooses. I can change it, but maybe they don’t want my background. Then it becomes some kind of tug of war? And in a group chat with multiple people everyone has to agree?
Why can’t there simply be an option to let the chat on your device look how you want it to?

I know, it’s such a small thing, but sometimes it’s the little things, you know? Where can I submit feedback?

Agreed. Whilst I really like the out of the box backgrounds Apple has provided in Messages, unfortunately some people simply have zero taste. I do not want to be forced to look at eye searingly awful backgrounds when I’m reading and composing messages.
