Alright i'm confused here.

In order to change an Icon in OS X to another pre-existing one, you:

-Go to the folder, or file with the cool icon you want to steal

-Select "Get info"

-Click the top left corner, highlighting the icon, and Copy it (command + C)

-Go to the folder, or file that you want to change icons for

-Open "get info" click the icon in the top left, and Select "paste"

--------------------------------

Now, I read a tutorial using Icon Composer to make a .icns file (icon file)

It tells me to use the Above method to change the desired icon with the custom one created with the app. When I select "Get Info" I do not see the icon I made in the top left -- I see a "ICNS" icon composer.app Icon

So am I missing something? How does one change an icon for a custom made one?
