Custom MS Word page numbers in TOC

Hello, I have a requirement to create page numbers of the form: A-A-1; A-A-2; ... and so on, where the leading alpha characters are the same (static) on each page of a section and the number increments from page to page through the section. Numbering in the next section begins again at 1 with different leading alphas (ex: A-B-1; A-B-2; ...). I'm able to make this work fine, however, I can't get the TOC builder to include each page's leading alphas in the TOC, just the numbers. I'm starting to conclude that this can't be done because the builder just grabs the <page> intrinsic and uses it.

Any suggestions for how to accomplish this or a conclusive answer that it can't be done would be most appreciated.
