I just noticed that unlike in High Sierra, when I double tap on a 'quick look' preview, via space bar, nothing happens, as opposed to the file opening in whichever app as I'm used to - can I somehow change this? nothing in trackpad or finder settings suggests I can, and reader, I'm not happy.

It's yet another "improvement" that actually makes Mac worse. The only reasoning I can see is that you can now select text in text files, and it makes sense that double-clicking inside a text file would apply to text selection. Why it no longer works for any other file type as well is anyone's guess. It's obviously possible to change the behavior dependent on file type, just that Apple's poor excuse of a development team hasn't done so.

Cherish your memories of High Sierra, it's all down hill from here. Straight off the El Cap cliff, honestly. So many things that used to be quick are now just more tedious.

well, I just effed myself out of apple 'communities', where someone took pains to demonstrate how using the double tap function in quick look, they could extract text from the screenshot of my post there, and when I pointed out that this supposedly 'more useful functionality' stems from another idiotic feature known as 'live text' (at least you can disable it, for now), which plasters an icon on any image whether it contains text or not, and which I have disabled, and which you are still free to use in preview app, I was modded for not being 'constructive'.

so what was a 'quick look' (cue's in the name) tool has now become some kind of all-in-one, but still reduced functionality half-arsed something. it's ridiculous.

You could use the standard keyboard shortcut to open files in Finder: cmd-downArrow
Or the alternative: cmd-O

Both work in Finder and also when a Finder's Quick Preview window is in the front.

I know I could, but never have and not about to start, my post is about the trackpad, not keyboard shortcuts.

... in which macrumours becomes wordreference: as in 'quick view opened via space bar'. you're welcome.
