It looks like apple has let you (re)add your own custom ringtones with iPhone firmware 1.1.2

Just take your m4a file, and rename it to a m4r, double click it, and it should open in iTunes, then you can sync them to your iPhone again!

Doesn't work for me, I have iTunes 7.5 and 1.1.2 and have tried every combination of renaming and resizing I can think of. I also tried using Makeiphoneringtone still no luck I don't undersdand why this is working so easily for others but not for me.
 
Try to get info on the m4a file, and change the extension from within the get info panel.

if that doesnt work, make sure the file is less than 30 seconds long...

Thats the way I did it one was 29 seconds and some others I used were less than 10 seconds. I got this to work in the previous versions before it was disabled and I'm doing it the same way now.
