Was the file a .caf file? Usually when it doesn't work it's either that the file type is incorrect or there is a small typo in the naming of the file.

when I copied the file over it's name was sms-received4.caf.aif I renamed it and took the aif part out. Was I suppose to do that?

Your tones are in the wrong format. They're currently in aif format which is why they're not working. The file extension of the tone should be .caf and the name of the tone should simply be sms-received1, sms-received2, etc.

Did you convert these tones through iTunes or did you use some other program?

Rename the FILE EXTENSION of the tone to .caf

iTunes will output the files into AIFF format so all you need to do is rename the file extension of the tone and change the name to smsreceived1. Sounds like you only changed the file name and not the actual extension.

iTunes doesn't normally make an AIFF file (which is used for sms ringtones).
Normally, it's default to AAC which is for call ringtones and not for SMS tones.

Make sure your import setting is set to AIFF in preference and try again.

It just started working today:D don't know what the problem was? Only thing I did today was install gridlock and then I checked about four hours later just to see if it worked and it did.

thanks for the help

What is the best/easiest software to edit audio? I want to use a specific sound as my text alert but I want to cut it down.

thanks

using windows 7 btw, but could use a mac if I have to.

Didn't want to make another thread so I just bumped this one.

I like audacity. You open the file, cut the segments you don't want and save the rest. I'm not a power user, so I'm sure I haven't even gone beyond the tip of the iceberg. However, it does what I need it to.
I don't know if there's a windows version though.
