So I updated to iOS 16. Thankfully it kept my existing wallpaper. The clock on the lock screen moved up to make room for widgets (so looks unbalanced too high) and is in a bolder font which I'm not yet keen on. No problem, I thought, the lock screen is now customisable.

However, I cannot figure out how to customise this lock screen. It seems like the lock screen on iPhone is now conceptionally like an Apple watch face. I can add and customise new lock screen faces. I just cannot customise the first lock screen face which is the only one I want to use.

The original lock screen cannot be customised, you will have to make your own. Once you make your own the original one can be deleted, so you will have just the one lock screen.

Thanks, Radeon! I was able to find the old wallpaper online, download it, create a new lock screen face, customise it to my liking, then delete the original lock screen face, and only have one lock screen.

Who at Apple thought this was an acceptable procedure? What is the rationale behind not making the default lock screen editable?

Yeah, I lost my old homescreen pattern that I had for like 5-6 years. It was from one of those many wallpaper apps from back in the day that were never updated to 64 bit.

It is preserved in the "default lock screen", but I cannot customize it. I also couldn't find it online, so I had to settle for finding something similar.

I wish Apple's instructions made that more clear. Thankfully MacRumors forums (and Radeon85) came through with the answer. Now I have to figure out which of my many photos is actually the one I chose for a lock screen. Seems odd they didn't give an option to create a new lock screen from the existing Lock Screen image.
