I don't know if this has been posted before, but I found an easy manual way to change the mac os x logon screen.
step one- go to the desktop pictures folder (located in HD/ Library)
step two- locate your default desktop picture (If you don't know what it is, make a new user and look at the desktop picture)
step three- copy/ paste the picture you desire to be your logon pic in the desktop pictures folder
step four- rename the default pic with a new name (Or just put a space in the name)
step five- rename the desired logon pic the original default's name
now log out and see if it changed!
