Cut function in Mail

Hi, I've recently switched to MAC from a PC and very happy with it so far. However, today I selected a few important emails in Mail and selected 'cut' to paste them in a new folder but they have now gone from inbox but I cannot paste them - any ideas where they might have been placed? I've looked in trash.
