Cydia updates? Essential? Complete?

Just re jailbroke my 3G and its gonna stay on 3.1.3 no matter if push works or not im fed up lol.

Question is when first launching cydia it gets those updates, you guys recommend doing just the essential one or the complete?

Im not quite sure the benefits of either..

I have always done the complete upgrade of Cydia components with no problems. I am more choosy with other updates.
