I've got a Digidesign 002 chained to a 1TB LaCie HDD via FW400, and a 1TB Mercury Pro HDD chained to the LaCie via FW800. The LaCie then runs FW800 into my MBP2012. Main question: with multiple HDDs chained, if one were to crash, would it cause any potential harm to the other?

If the drive itself dies, no.
If the controller in the enclosure dies, yes. No real harm, but the chain will be broken and you'll need to plug the other device(s) in without the failed device in the chain.
Controllers do fail, just not as often as drives.
