My pride and joy 128 gb space grey SE1 suffered a serious glass breakage last year shortly after having apple install a new battery. Half the screen works. It is obviously retired. But was wondering if it is reasonably possible to self repair. Might be too tricky. Apple won’t touch it. Third part might.

It sounds like Apple didn't break the display during the battery replacement so I suggest getting a 3rd party replacement display and do it yourself. There are plenty of step by step videos that show the procedure. If you're not technically inclined you can have a 3rd party repair shop do it

A third party screen isn’t expensive so you could look into that. It’ll probably be the same price as an OEM battery replacement.

I'm right now in the process of putting a new battery in my SE1, and I've read up quite a bit on the disassembly process and the screen. One thing I noticed is that the touchID would easily stop working if you were to disconnect and reconnect it in the wrong way, and I suspect that may also be an issue with replacing the screen yourself. You'll have to find the details, just mentioning it.

No screen protector installed after a new battery replacement or even the screen protector got broken?

i'll look into it when i have time. of course, the dollar value of these phones is low enough that the cost of repair may exceed it. and with the se4 scheduled first quarter 25, i'll probably wait to see what that brings.
