I got 3.5 years of troubble free computing and then this past week I keep getting bb instead of b. Apple's going to take care of it thanks to the keybboard repair program, but as soon as I get this bbad bboy bback it's going to bbe sold and replaced. I know I'm not the first, bbut I really thought that the issue was overbblown and clearly it's not.

Feel your pain, my 13” 2016 pro is starting to have issues also, luckily blowing air into the keyboard like a idiot 🤦‍♂️😂 seems to fix it temporarily.

Waiting for the 16” refresh, then can finally say good buy to the butterfly keyboard for good.

My 13" 2016 Touch Bar MBP was diagnosed with keyboard cancer in the summer of 2018. The notebook was never abused, and never used outside in the open. Considering the issues people were having with the 2016 and 2017 boards, I even had a Moshi protector on it, a first for me. I sold it off after it was back from keybo-therapy and got myself a great deal on a showroom-piece 2017 MBA. You should sell it off, cut your losses, and get yourself a new Air or a new MBP with the scissor keyboards.

I advocate selling since the entire notebook will be new in a way, all from speakers to battery to trackpad, everything will be replaced as part of replacement of just the keyboard. So, effectively, save the display and the main logic board, it will be a new notebook with a new battery. Selling it off should be easier right away.

I've posted this before, but I sense that this is one of the reasons why Jony Ive no longer works for Apple...
I agree and it is a real indication of the rot, lack of focus on/interest in the customer and sleaze at the senior levels of Apple to have let this defective product be sold for 4 years. And still millions are lining up regularly to hand over more of their hard earned cash to Apple. Oh well....good luck to them.

Thanks for listening and I really thought the issue was overblown. Then I remembered that I actually had it replaced for a faulty spacebar at 2-months in. So this will in fact be my second keyboard replacement. The reality is that it might have been failing for a while now and I didn't notice because I only use undocked when traveling and, well, Covid. The only saving grace is that I'm not out of town working with a client due to, again, Covid.

Annoyingly, what was a purely personal machine became my primary business machine since I started working for myself, so 5-9 days of downtime for a replacement really burns. I'll use it docked until the return kit arrives and then fall back to a Lenovo Windows machine I have around.

My trust in it is gone, so I'll keep it around through the keyboard repair period, but then it's gone. I use this machine to put food on the table and it has to be solid.

Gah, this way of thinking is infuriating. Why do you need a problem to happen to you or someone you personally know in order for you to recognize that it actually is a problem?
Sadly, that type of thinking is very common. People who experience an issue are accused of being trolls or drama queens by those who haven't experienced that thing themselves. It's part of the cultish groupthink that happens in ANY community.

This is why it isn't very productive to try to convince people that something that is happening is actually happening.

There has never been a time when a large number of MR members experience a problem that turned out to be overhyped.

I think it's human nature. And perhaps my bad for stating it that way.

I certainly never doubted that people were having problems - heck after posting this, I remembered that I'd already had a replacement early on! So it's not that I didn't believe it was an issue, it's just that my keyboard was fine for years. Also, my wife's keyboard is fine, my dad's keyboard is fine, and my friend's keyboard is fine etc. So within my personal frame of reference (my own little world), these keyboard failures seemed rare.

Forgive the horrible analogy, but it's kind of like how "no-one gets Covid-19" until someone you personally know gets it, and then it becomes real. I know so many people who talk like that right now. (But let's not get into that debate here).

If there's one thing you can be sure of, today's Apple doesn't issue a 4 year extended warranty for every portable computer made for more than 3 years if a problem is "overblown."

Again - perhaps I could have used better wording here. It was late at night and I was venting.

At least you're still in the repair program, though you only have a few more months of that.

People I pity is those after the repair program ends. Then they will really know just how much of an expensive headache it is. These 2016 design of MBP's are going to be flooding the secondary market once people realise the costs without cover...

Q-6

I found a great deal on a used MacBook Pro 2017 and bought it yesterday. Only one problem the h button doesn't work at all. Anyone know any ome fixes or will apple actually fix it? Were can I bring it during the pandemic?

So you must have typed your post on another keyboard as your first "h" worked but then your second "_ome" did not. You may want to get both keyboards repaired at the same time.

Apple will fix it if the computer is less than 4 years old.

I actually ad to copy and paste it off auto correct lmao

Well - I got my MBP back. Lower chassis replaced, keyboard fixed, and even a pro-active repair of my 'flexgate' cable. I even think I got the new butterfly keyboard with the membrane because it's definitely quieter than before. I might even say I'm happy about it... :)

My plan to sell this puppy and get a 16" MBP has gone out of the window with the announcement of these ARM Macs. I'll probably ride this Intel generation out with this 15"'er because other than this failure-prone keyboard and slightly cramped 256GB SSD, this machine pretty much does everything I need to.

Only the 2018-19 models have the membrane and that keyboard isn't compatible with the older versions. It doesn't seem to make a lot of difference in how the keyboard performs, regardless.

THIS!

I also just got mine back from its 3rd keyboard replacement and I was looking to sell it locally but with the ARM announcement I will just try and baby it for a couple more years. I still have about a year of coverage on the keyboard so I hope it lasts.

Dang :(. I could swear it feels and sounds less clickety-clackety... Thanks for breaking my heart.

Yep - a real conundrum. I really didn't want to still have this thing outside of the keyboard repair program (which ends October 2020 for me). It's my primary work machine and when it's offline it is super inconvenient. There's no guarantee that a newer 16" would have 100% uptime, but at least I would know that it's not a ticking keyboard timebomb! With that said, if it does fail, I can keep using docked and figure something else out for travel like a used Air or something like that.
