My new I7 imac has only the Firewire 800 port. I have a lacie hard drive hooked up to it. The lacie has Firewire 400 ports on its backside. I have a Firewire 400 DVD writer hooked to that. Assuming the DVD writer is not doing anything at the moment, does my connecting it to the hard drive slow down the Firewire 800 connection?

You've only got FireWire ports operating at 400Mbps there.

Any connection (even the one between your Mac and your La Cie hard drive) runs at the SLOWER of the two interface speeds - i.e. 400Mbps.
