My friend is currently waiting in Starbucks using free wifi to message me on Skype through their Kindle because they tried to go to Sprint to buy their first ever iPhone and Sprint's entire system is in maintainence...

Seriously, what luck.

Tell your friend to go to an Apple store or Best Buy and purchase their Sprint iPhone there.

First law of being a Sprint customer: Never trust Sprint.
Second law of being a Sprint customer: Always checkup on Sprint to make sure they did what they said they would.
Third law of being a Sprint customer: Never deal with Sprint customer service or support when a third party (such as Apple) is available.

If your friend assumes that in dealing with Sprint they will always lie to him, try to cheat him, screw him over or in general just be extremely incompetent and your friend proactively takes measures to protect himself from all of that then your friend will do fine on Sprint.

I won't get into data, speed and coverage issues if your friend lives in an area where they haven't finished upgrading the network.

Source: Me. 16 years with Sprint.
