On my unlocked jailbroken iPhone, the Apple Apps store often wants to
'upgrade' my OS 4.0 to 4.2. I have not accepted the request. What are
the consequences of accepting the offer to 'upgrade' to 4.2?

You might want to double check whether you have a 3G or 3GS. If Itunes asks you to upgrade your phone to 4.2.1, then you have a 3G. Otherwise, it will ask you to upgrade it to 5.0.1 now

In any way, if your phone is not factory unlocked, then it will lock back to original carrier once you update it to the latest firmware.

Many Thanks for the quick reply.
I thought so. I would have to 'unlock' all over again if I understand you
correctly.

btw, I'm sure it's a 3GS.

Hi.
I have the original packing material...the phone was formerly
related to AT&T...I am the first and only owner.

The Model # is: MB715LL

The Version Firmware # is: 05.13.04

The Version is: 4.0 (8A293)

It is a 3GS. If you plug into Itunes, it should inform you that there is 5.0.1 fw available for upgrade and not 4.2.1.
