Can anyone explain clearly how this dialog works (attached). This appears in macOS Sonoma in Settings > General > Storage when you click the "Store in iCloud" button. However...
The first option, "Desktop and Documents" appears to mimic the setting in iCloud > iCloud Drive. HOWEVER, I have that option turned OFF (and want to keep it off), but the setting always shows as ON in this dialog. How is this setting different from the iCloud setting, and if it isnt, why is it ON in this dialog even though I have OFF it in iCloud Drive settings?
The second option, "Photos" is also confusing. Currently, I keep full-resolution photos locally (I think), and also sync with iCloud. But this option APPEARS to imply I'm not syncing at full resolution, since it's turned ON. It's also unclear what happens if I turn this option OFF. Does it stop syncing photos entirely, or does continue to sync, but at full resolution instead of reduced resolution? This is a VERY poorly worded dialog.
Finally, if I DO disable both these settings in the dialog, the Store in iCloud button disables anyway!
To my mind, this dialog qualifies for a "dark pattern" .. the toggles do NOT seem to reflect my current settings, but instead "suggest" that I should turn these features on (though the wording is very ambiguous) by showing the toggles as ON (even though the feature is turned off). This is bad UI design: the toggle should reflect the current state, NOT what Apple WANT the state to be if I click the "Store in iCloud" button.
Or am I missing something here?
