So i was messing around and came up with another browser idea. Dark Web is based on the work in progress AF-OSX-PPC code base. It uses a different UI and comes with a spiffy black theme. It uses a mobile user agent and plays youtube decently (on a G5 at least).

If you wanted something lighter than TenFourFox or InterWebPPC, but more usable than RetroZilla, then this might be it.

Grab it from here: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/dark-web-browser

I might try this on my PowerBook. I spent ages getting T4Fx modified using a dark theme and userstyles. Having a dark theme actually built in would be great.

OK. New browser default. Thanks @wicknix!

Copied over my profiles and extensions.

It's pretty fast, especially considering my PB is conducting a CCC backup at this time. Interesting to see how quick it will be when it's done with that.

Another note, I cannot seem to click on the JS to turn off the RTE. That may be down to my modified prefs file though.

Cool beans. Yeah, it zips along on my G5. Can't test on the power book yet as it's compiling some macports stuff. Be interesting to hear some results. Some extensions may need to be rolled back to earlier releases if they act funny, or don't work at all. This is based around PM27 and FF38.9 code in case anyone runs in to extension oddities.

It definetly runs faster than the version of T4Fx I was using. Even with the RTE editor on (here on MR) it's still reasonable. Pretty bearable to use. Still testing though.

Thanks once more for the continuing work on your Mozilla-based browser flavours, @wicknix . You are doing amazing work.

I can report that on SL-PPC, one can browse to a site without trouble. As with the recent AF update I tested, none of the pull-down menus is responsive beyond the cursory triple-flash when selected. To quit the browser, Cmd-Q and the pull-down were unresponsive, so the Cmd-Alt-Del route had to be taken.

As with AF, I am fully aware the SL-PPC environment is not in the neighbourhood of the target audience here. :) That said, InterwebPPC still works like a charm on SL-PPC, and with InterwebPPC, I can even watch inline YT clips found within a forum post — despite the fact that the browser is fully relying on the CPU for rendering that YT video (which may be the default behaviour for all browsers on these older systems anyway).

Does RetroZilla work on SL-PPC? I find it odd that some browsers don't as the clouded leopard should be equivalent to 10.4 and a half in theory right? Yeah, embedded YT vids do play quite well. :)

A little while back, you had me try out Retrozilla on SL-PPC, and just to be sure, I launched it once more just now. All features on it are responsive, as far as I can tell (I’m able to access “Preferences…,” for example, as well as pull down to “show/hide” browser interface features).

So whatever in the source code which distinguishes both RetroZilla (based on much older code) and InterwebPPC (on relatively newer code) from the AF-related code (the in-between child) remains a mystery of sorts, I reckon.

As someone whose never done anything on the dark web or used any of the browsers you’ve mentioned, can someone explain the real world, everyday benefits?
This browser has nothing to do with the dark web AFAICS. It just uses a dark theme to look cool.

If it’s tracking, why not just use Duck Duck Go?
Tracking goes much further than just search engines. Every website you visit can track you. DuckDuckGo can’t do anything about that.

Can’t you just turn off all cookies? If the tracking is built in, how does a dark browser function?

Just curious~
You're hung up on the browser name. The name has nothing to do with the fact that this is a normal PowerPC web browser. It's like asking how does a black car function?

Like a car does right? It just happens to have a black paint job.

As to cookies - yes. You can turn them all off.

But do not expect to ever be able to login to a website. Websites use cookies to keep you logged in.

I already thought that someone finally fixed Torbrowser or i2p-browser for PPC, but alas.

Anyway, nice find, thanks!

This has nothing to do with "the dark web" or tor, etc. Its just a dark themed browser.

There is. @eyoungren care to elaborate?
Go to ~username/Library/Application Support/Firefox. Copy the Profile folder to ~username/Library/Application Support/Dark Web

That will overwrite the current Dark Web profile folder, so back up the old one if you want to keep it.

Unrelated to the thread topic, but related to TFF settings: do you know if this may work?

Back in 2011-2012 I was using Torbutton (a browser extension) and Vidalia - the software that actually connects you to the Tor network.

Vidalia is discontinued and good luck finding the Torbutton extension.

I have no doubt that 10-11 years later none of that is secure anymore.

Thank you. I rather meant the specific comment via the link, regarding enabling i2p browsing.

(For tor, proxy via tor works in TFF, but onion sites do not, even after being enabled, dunno why.)

Anyone try on a G3 yet? Just curious and plan to install anyhoo to see what happens on mine, BUT...maybe someone else did also.

I've got it running on my G4 iBook right now and it actually works pretty well! It's the first time in a while I've had a usable internet browser on this thing. It even plays youtube videos at 040p lol.
