darn persistant user group

I can't seem to completely remove a user group which I created and subsequently removed. It appears listed among user groups on any file information panel - see attached image with the offending user group 'staff' circled in red.

Staff is a built in group. You didn't create it. You cannot remove it.

No worries, from the user perspective it was an odd choice of name for the group!
