I'm pulling my hair out trying to make a decision, so I'd love help from people who've been down this road.

My current situation is that I use a Mac Mini 2020 M1 16GB RAM plugged into an OWC Dual Drive USB 3.1 12TB RAID 0 drive, and a slow OWC Quad USB 2.0 32TB for slow access to archived files I dont use much. Both are backed up to local drives and backblaze. The issue is I've run out of space and need to upgrade rather quickly.

My workflow is that I work with a remote video editor, and I do some video editing myself. We shoot to SSDs, and back those up on the Mac Mini setup. We often need B-roll footage from the older projects that are on the mac mini, so I usually pull them back onto SSDs, or dump them into dropbox to share them with the editor.

Here are the two paths I'm considering for the upgrade:

Option 1:
- Buy a 4 Bay OWC Thunderbay Thunderbolt 3
- Keep doing my current system
- maybe figure out if I can hook the mac mini up to 10GB ethernet to get faster access from other computers in the house

Option 2:
- Synology Ds1522+
- 10gb ethernet to be able to access on two macbook pros in the house

Given that I'm not doing a ton of collaborative editing is the Synology worth going through the trouble of learning how to set it up and set up the network correctly? Is there an easy way to give remote access to my editor to my mac mini so I can just keep using DAS and MacOS? Is there anything I'm not thinking of?
