Friends have very recently acquired a Macbook, with 10.5.4, and an Apple wireless mouse. They are getting mightily watered off when each time the scroll ball is pressed, Dashboard appears. Okay, it's easy enough to send it packing, but they don't want to have to do that. How can it be stopped? There are no Preferences as such, they tell me.

go to System Preferences, click the Keyboard and Mouse icon, click the Mouse tab and change the function of the scroll ball click.

seriously thats a very basic setting. tell them to check out Finder's Help menu and open the Help application. lots and lots of helpful information for new users.
