Data access in non-3G areas

Just a quick question I thought up today...

If you get the iPad 3G version, but travel to an area outside 3G coverage (but still has ATT cell coverage), will you be able to access data via EDGE? Or does the iPad only work in areas with true 3G coverage (i.e. the EDGE radios are not installed)?

Unless I am extremely mistaken, AT&T 3G hardware is completely backward compatible with EDGE. Same deal as the iPhone hardware. If this weren't the case, there would be no other issue discussed on this board.
